Fishing Overview

Utah's Wildlife Board will meet Oct 2. They are expected to approve significant changes to fishing rules. Here's the meeting agenda. Member of the public are encouraged to attend and participate.

Scofield has been hot this week, for both rainbows and tiger trout. It should stay good through the fall, right up until it freezes.

Strawberry continues to be spotty but should become more consistent as temperatures cool. Trout there and in other reservoirs are hitting all kinds of baits and lures - Rapala-type minnow imitations usually work well this time of year.

Our streams continue to fish very well - most were good through the summer and they usually become even better about now. Terrestrial patterns will be good until we get hard frost. Streamers are working, and they will become more effective as fall progresses. Standard nymphs are usually good year-round.

Lake Powell striper fishing is sporadic - very good if you stumble upon an active school. Smallmouth bass fishing is very good and will become even better during the next few weeks. The lower lake has been best. Watch wayneswords.com for current information.

Uinta Mountains are fishing very well, and there is still time to make a hike before the snow flies. Backpack, day hike or fish a lake accessible by road - you'll find good fishing all around. The mountains are beautiful right now, with fall colors peaking.

Many other waters offer good fishing. See DWR's weekly fishing reports.

What's New

I fished Strawberry last Saturday afternoon, when it was rainy and windy. The lake was choppy and we found only fair action. We tried one of my favorite spots, and tried all kinds of lures, but didn't get anything more than a few random strikes. Others tell me they had better luck Saturday morning when the water was calm. Here's more about my trip.

I had hoped to make a longer trip this coming Saturday, perhaps spend most of the day fishing. But a friend is moving and I need to help, so there goes the morning. I'll get out somewhere in the afternoon. I'd like to hit a water where I'm almost certain to find fast action. Perhaps I'll go to Electric Lake.

Right now is the perfect time to hike the deserts of southern Utah.

We have this new article about hiking the Chesler Park area in Canyonlands National Park.

National Public Lands Day, Saturday, September 27. National parks, monuments and most other public lands will not charge entrance fees on that day. Fees will still be levied for camping, boating and other activities. Volunteers will participate in work projects to improve many public areas. To get involved, contact land managers in your area to learn about volunteer opportunities.

Skydive Moab Festival, Sept 25-28. Skydivers from all across the world will be jumping from 3 - 20+ passenger airplanes and free falling for over 1 minute above Moab's most amazing landscape. Come see over 300+ skydivers jump and make over 3000 jumps in just 4 days. They'll reach speeds well over 150 mph. For more info visit the link, send an email to info@skydivemoab.com, or call 800-UGO-JUMP- 435-259-JUMP

View migrating birds of prey. Thousands of birds of prey fly through Utah's clear, crisp skies every fall. You can see and learn more about these migrating birds of prey during Utah's annual Raptor Watch Day on Sep. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Orem overlook along Squaw Peak Road.
