What's New
Stormy Weekend Ahead
Take care if you head out this weekend because some areas may get heavy rain and strong wind.

I'll be hiking, getting away from the holiday crowds. I've decided to do a little-known canyon in Zion Park. Should have spectacular scenery without anyone bothering us.

I fished Electric Lake last weekend. It was slow, but it was still enjoyable getting out. We caught 2 cutthroat and 1 tiger trout.

Trout Unlimited is having a Green River one-fly fishing tournament on Sept 17-19, to raise money to help fund coldwater fisheries projects. Participation will be limited to 15 teams of up to five anglers each. One fly per person - strictly catch and release. Details.

Strawberry Wildlife Festival will be Sept 18-19 at the US Forest Service visitor center at Strawberry Reservoir. Strawberry is not only one of the most famous fisheries in the West, it is also home to over 50 birds of prey, foxes, coyotes, song birds, moose, elk and many other types of wildlife. Visitors will be able to see thousands of bright red kokanee salmon migrating up Strawberry River right outside the Forest Service Visitor Center. There will be fishing seminars, displays, booths, music, food and fun.

Lake Powell Fall Shad Rally will also be Sept 18-19. Headquarters will be at Stanton Creek, near Bullfrog. Join lake Powell enthusiasts enjoying great fall striper fishing. Learn, eat and socialize.

Fishing Overview
Our streams continue to fish well. Terrestrials are most effective - hoppers, ants, beetles. They will continue to produce for a few more weeks. Then streamers will be a good choice. Standard nymphs work well year-round when dead-drifted along the bottom. Talk to the guys in the fly shops to find the best patterns for the streams you want to fish.

Water flows are great on the Green, Provo, Weber and most of our other streams. Fly fishing this fall should be as good as any year in recent memory.

Flaming Gorge continues to fish well for trout, kokanee, lake trout and smallmouth. Read the proclamation so you understand the special regs. All kokanee caught between Sept 10 and Nov 30 must be released to give the fish a chance to spawn. Linwood Bay is closed to fishing from Oct 15 through Dec 12, to protect lake trout that spawn there.

Lake Powell remains hot for stripers, smallmouth, catfish and bluegill. Striper boils are somewhat random, but action is great when you get into a big one. The bright moon may slow success this weekend, if it shines through the storm clouds. Action should be red hot in a couple weeks, when the moon wanes.

Uinta Mountains are still a great bet - there is plenty of time yet to get into the high country. The mountains can be fickle in the fall so be prepared for anything, from hot sun to snow and hail.

Strawberry and many other reservoirs offer good trout fishing. The algae in Strawberry will be dying back and that will allow fishing success to become more consistent.
